Georgia’s Premier Commits to Meeting “Reasonable” EU Demands
(MENAFN) Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed that his administration is ready to comply with all the European Union’s conditions, as long as they are deemed “reasonable,” according to media outlets on Tuesday.
Following the submission of a report by the Foreign Ministry to Brussels on August 31 regarding the EU’s recommendations, Kobakhidze highlighted that the European Commission requested Georgia to address several issues related to its visa-free regime.
These included repealing the “foreign agents” law and lifting restrictions described as a ban on LGBT propaganda.
“We are absolutely ready to fulfill all reasonable demands, but it is necessary to justify that they are really logical. We will then fulfill them all,” he stated, as reported.
Kobakhidze added that some demands were logical and had been fully met, whereas others appeared unreasonable and lacked clear justification for their necessity.
He specifically mentioned the laws concerning the “Transparency of Foreign Influence” and the “Protection of Family Values and Minors,” questioning the rationale behind permitting same-sex couples to adopt children.
In December 2023, the EU granted Georgia candidate status, outlining political and legal criteria for further integration steps.
Brussels has consistently stressed that advancements in human rights and democratic reforms will play a crucial role in moving the accession process forward.
